Kevin Klein engineered a tactically superb and tireless defense of the Nashville school system in one of the most significant lawsuits in our city’s history. As chairman of the Metro Nashville Board of Education, I witnessed Kevin’s mastery of complex subjects and his coolness under sustained pressure, both of which proved critical in winning the legal battle.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

With a combination of big-firm training and courtroom experience, Kevin has earned a reputation as a skilled litigator and an excellent trial attorney. Kevin has tried more than 30 cases — ranging from relatively simple negligence cases to multi-week federal trials. He has also briefed and argued 17 appeals, again, from straightforward state court matters to federal appeals involving complex legal issues and millions of dollars.

By way of background, Kevin graduated from Cornell Law School in 2000. After law school, and for two summers during law school, Kevin worked for Husch & Eppenberger, LLP (now Husch Blackwell, LLP), a major Midwestern defense firm with a first-rate litigation department. As an associate at Husch, Kevin successfully defended employers in all types of employment matters. More broadly, he learned the uncompromising attention to detail that high-stakes litigation requires.

In 2003, Kevin came to work for then-Director of Law Karl Dean at the Nashville Department of Law. He spent the next nine years in the trenches, investigating claims, conducting discovery, taking depositions, trying cases, and briefing and arguing appeals. During that time, Kevin got dozens, if not hundreds, of cases dismissed before trial with no payment to the plaintiff, won numerous jury and bench trials, and successfully briefed and argued cases in front of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, Tennessee Court of Appeals, and Tennessee Supreme Court.

In August 2012, Kevin founded The Klein Law Office, PLLC, later adding Saul Solomon and becoming Klein Solomon Mills, PLLC. At Klein Solomon Mills, our mission is to provide outstanding legal services and excellent customer service. Kevin won’t settle for anything less.

PERSONAL BACKGROUND

Born in Lincoln, Nebraska during the coldest two-week stretch on record there. Raised on 16 acres in Vibbard, Missouri, population 96.

Growing up in the country, Kevin learned how to shoot a bow, fish, play baseball, play football, and wrestle. By the time he made it to high school, wrestling was all consuming. And those hours of hard work paid off: Kevin ended up a two-time state champion, also earning All-American honors from the National High School Wrestling Coaches Association, Asics Tiger, and USA Wrestling Magazine.

After high school, Kevin walked on at the University of Nebraska. After a solid first year, he earned a small scholarship. Kevin was competing for a starting spot when a rib injury put him on the sidelines. Watching practice every day, Kevin did some soul searching. He knew that one day wrestling would be over — and he wanted to go to law school. That next fall, Kevin transferred to Brown University. Initially, it was intimidating going to school with kids from the best prep schools in the country. But Kevin soon discovered that (a) most of them weren’t any smarter than he was, and (b) virtually none of them tried as hard.

Two-and-a-half years later, Kevin graduated from Brown with a 3.5 GPA. He was also a two-year letter winner and starter on Brown’s top-25 D-I wrestling team. His academic performance earned him Academic All-Ivy Wrestling honors and Brown Wrestling’s Highest Academic Average Award. His performance on the mat earned him All-Ivy Wrestling honors and, after battling back from a series of injuries, Brown’s Most Improved Wrestler Award.

In 2013, Kevin was inducted into the Excelsior Springs, Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. And while his wrestling days are long-since over, in the words of Olympic Gold Medalist Dan Gable, “Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy.”

In 2021, Kevin took a four-month sabbatical to pursue a longtime calling, joining the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps. Having completed the Direct Commission Course at Ft. Benning, Georgia and Officer Basic Course in Charlottesville, Virginia, Kevin is now proud to serve as a Captain in the U.S. Army JAG Corps Reserves.

Finally, and most importantly, Kevin is happily married to Hillary Klein, also an attorney in Nashville. They have two wonderful and rambunctious children, Grace and Luke.
